Tour de la Mortella is a ruined 16th-century Genoese tower on the island of Corsica. The British were impressed by how difficult the stout, thick-walled fort was to capture, so they used it as a template for the 140 Martello towers they built around their Empire in the 19th-century. [2816x2112]
